The action came after Chicago investigators were alerted to a separate case in which more than 50 decaying bodies were discovered at a funeral home on the city’s Southeast Side. That finding prompted officials to review other facilities handling human remains for possible non‑compliance with storage regulations.
In response, the Comptroller’s Office instructed Bohemian National Cemetery to cease all intake of remains until a compliance review can be completed. The order specifically cites potential breaches of statutes that require proper preservation, documentation, and secure storage of bodies.
Bohemian National Cemetery, a historic burial ground on Chicago’s West Side, has not been publicly linked to the Southeast Side funeral home where the bodies were found. Nevertheless, the Comptroller’s Office emphasized that the same legal standards apply to all entities that receive, store, or inter human remains within the state.
Chicago investigators will work with the cemetery’s management to assess current practices, verify that existing remains are being handled in accordance with the law, and determine whether any corrective measures are needed. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not indicated whether additional sites may be examined.
