A Chicago judge dismissed a lawsuit that aimed to require three elected officials to decide between seeking re‑election to their current posts or filing mayoral nomination petitions.

The action, brought last month by mayoral candidate William J. Quinlan, targeted Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley and Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, with the intent of narrowing the mayoral contest.

The court’s ruling threw out the case, allowing the three officials to continue their current campaigns or pursue a mayoral bid without judicial direction.
