The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago issued a water‑use advisory on Wednesday, urging Chicago-area residents to postpone showers and avoid running washing machines or dishwashers as heavy rain is expected through Thursday.

The advisory is intended to lessen strain on the storm‑water system, which processes billions of gallons of water through seven water reclamation plants. Reducing household water use is meant to help prevent flooding and storm‑water backup.

The district noted that the city's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan is operating to manage stormwater and protect the water environment during the rain event.
