Numerous websites belonging to the Canadian federal government and the Quebec provincial government went offline on Friday, October 21, after developers moved quickly to address a security flaw in the PHP programming language and called on site owners to update their software.
The outage stemmed from a vulnerability in PHP, a widely used codebase that powers many online services. Flaws in its code can trigger broad disruptions when not patched promptly.
