Halton Regional Police Service launched an investigation in April 2026 after an Oakville resident found an Accutag tracking unit attached to their vehicle. Police say the device is linked to an alleged car thief operating out of Quebec who has been placing similar units on high‑end automobiles throughout the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area.
The discovery prompted officers to examine a pattern of tracking devices found on several luxury cars in the region. According to the investigation, the thief uses the units to monitor the location of valuable vehicles, enabling the theft of those automobiles once they are identified as high‑value targets.
Authorities have identified the suspect as a resident of Quebec, though no name has been released. The individual is alleged to have traveled to the GTA to affix the tracking hardware to the targeted cars. Police believe the scheme involved multiple locations across the area, including Oakville and other municipalities within the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area.
Halton police are continuing to trace the devices and assess the extent of the theft operation. The force has not disclosed any arrests or the number of vehicles recovered at this stage. The investigation remains active as officers work to locate additional tracking units and prevent further thefts of high‑value automobiles in the region.
