Metrolinx chief executive Michael Lindsay announced that GO Transit will operate with temporary service reductions in September 2026 because the agency does not have enough crew members available after the FIFA World Cup.

The decision follows a period in which GO Transit expanded its train schedules to accommodate the influx of visitors for the 2026 World Cup. During that time, the agency paused regular vacation and training programs for staff in order to increase service levels for the tournament.

Lindsay said that the pause in vacation and training left the system with a shortfall of crew once normal operations resumed. With fewer personnel on hand, GO Transit was forced to adjust its timetable and reduce the frequency of some trains to maintain safety and reliability.

The temporary changes affect routes across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, though specific lines and frequencies were not disclosed. Riders can expect fewer trains during peak periods and possible alterations to scheduled departure times.

Metrolinx highlighted that the service cuts are a short‑term measure while it works to restore staffing levels. The agency plans to resume regular vacation and training cycles once the crew shortage is resolved, aiming to return to the pre‑World Cup schedule as soon as feasible.

The situation underscores the challenges of balancing large‑scale event demands with everyday commuter needs. GO Transit officials emphasized that the temporary reductions are intended to preserve safety and maintain core service levels for passengers throughout the month.

Commuters are advised to check the latest GO Transit schedules and alerts for up‑to‑date information on the modified service.

The September adjustments are expected to be reviewed regularly, with the goal of restoring full service once staffing levels are back to normal.
