The investigation began after health officials detected several cases of the respiratory illness among residents and visitors to the area. Samples taken from the identified water features tested positive for the bacteria, confirming the presence of a potential source for the outbreak. Officials are now conducting extensive testing of additional installations throughout the downtown district to determine the full extent of the contamination.
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by inhaling aerosolized water that contains Legionella bacteria. The bacteria thrive in warm, stagnant water and can proliferate in systems such as cooling towers, hot tubs and decorative fountains when maintenance is inadequate. Symptoms typically include fever, cough and shortness of breath, and the illness can be severe, particularly for older adults or individuals with compromised immune systems.
Toronto Public Health has issued guidance to building owners and operators of affected facilities, urging immediate inspection, cleaning and disinfection of water systems. The agency also recommended that the public avoid exposure to aerosol‑produced water from the identified sources until they have been cleared.
