The Toronto Transit Commission launched a new pilot program on July 20, 2026 that equips streetcars on five downtown routes with artificial‑intelligence‑assisted cameras. The technology is intended to detect vehicles that illegally pass streetcars, a behavior that has contributed to safety concerns and service disruptions.

The pilot covers routes 501, 504, 505, 506 and 511. These corridors were selected because they experience high volumes of both streetcar traffic and private vehicles, creating frequent points of conflict. The AI‑enabled cameras are installed on the streetcars themselves and are programmed to identify when a motor vehicle moves around the front of a stopped or moving streetcar in violation of traffic rules.

When an illegal passing event is captured, the system records the incident and can provide evidence to enforcement agencies. The TTC hopes that the presence of the cameras will deter drivers from attempting the maneuver, thereby improving safety for passengers, operators and other road users. The pilot also aims to give the agency better data on the frequency and locations of such incidents, information that can guide future enforcement and infrastructure improvements.
